Ophthalmic Care Specialist, Technician

James is a keen observer of people and the world around him. He brings sharp intellectual curiosity, a dry sense of humor, and a deep attentiveness to every interaction. He can often appear stoic at first, until his insight and warmth reveal themselves through a subtle, witty grin.

Collaboration is essential to how James approaches his role at Homer Eyecare. He believes meaningful impact can only happen through shared effort, thoughtful dialogue, and mutual trust. Working closely with the team has shaped how he engages with people—focusing on the problem, not the person—and carrying that professionalism and care into all areas of his life.

Authenticity matters deeply to James. He takes his work to heart while allowing space for humor, honesty, and individuality. His empathy shows up through attentive listening and reflection—a silence that is intentional and meaningful before he speaks. James approaches each patient encounter with the understanding that the patient is the hero of their own story; his role is to guide attentively, listen carefully, and support intentionally. Patients feel this immediately and respond with trust, often embracing his calm, steady guidance.

Serving the Homer community means creating a safe and respectful space for people to be heard. James understands that medical care can feel very vulnerable, and he believes listening—without pretense or judgment—is one of the most meaningful ways to create that space and serve others. He values Homer’s lack of ostentation and its shared ethos of authenticity, a place shaped by diverse personalities, a wonderful eccentricity, and quiet depth.

International travel with the Homer Eyecare team has significantly shaped James’s perspective. Having never traveled outside the country before joining the practice, these experiences challenged assumptions, disrupted routine thinking, and deepened his appreciation for both global cultures and the rare, special place he calls home here in Alaska.

Outside of work, James is a writer and artist. He also enjoys writing, acting and working  in small local film productions, bringing the same curiosity and reflection to creative pursuits that he brings to patient care. Thoughtful, yet quietly (sometimes loudly) funny, Homer Eyecare wouldn’t be the same without him.
