Optometrist (OD)

Arriving in Homer in the autumn of 2021, Mario  brought with him a deep sense of compassion and a love for adventure. Before coming to Homer, he spent five years living in Dillingham, an experience that deepened his appreciation for Alaska’s wildness and the subsistence lifestyle—harvesting his own fish, hunting, and living closely connected to the land. Whether fishing remote lakes, hiking ridgelines, skiing, or catching a wave, exploration is central to how he experiences both Alaska and life.

Raised in rural northern Nevada, Mario graduated with honors from the Southern California College of Optometry before making his way north. His time in Alaska has shaped him not only professionally, but personally as well. During his time at Homer Eyecare, Mario has grown in many different ways—deepening his collaboration within the team as well as his clinical scope and expertise. He places a strong emphasis on truly hearing both patients and teammates and approaches care with humility, curiosity, and respect. His big heart and genuine smile have a way of immediately inviting a smile in return.

Collaboration is foundational to Mario’s work. Being part of the Homer Eyecare team has reinforced the importance of shared decision-making, open and goal-oriented communication, and working together cohesively to achieve the best possible outcomes. He believes strongly in caring for the whole person—not just their eyes, but their lives, families, and everyday challenges—meeting each patient where they are with empathy and thoughtful intention.

Serving the Homer community means contributing in ways that help both people and the town thrive. Mario believes it’s important to leave every place better than you found it and takes pride in giving back—whether through patient care, trail work, or time spent outdoors preserving the natural beauty that makes this region so unique and special. One of his favorite simple joys is being out on the trails, taking in views of the bay and mountains with friends and loved ones.

Traveling internationally with the Homer Eyecare team has further broadened Mario’s perspective, strengthening team bonds and deepening his understanding of different cultures and communities—experiences that continue to shape his growth as both a clinician and a human being.

Not many know that Mario also makes some of the best homemade tacos and salsas around—a skill that is undeniably appreciated in a town where people love and embrace good food. If you’re ever lucky enough to try them, you won’t be disappointed. It’s just one more way his generosity, warmth, and love of sharing show up beyond patient care—often among friends, family, or at one of our traditional Alaska potluck gatherings.
